Embarking on "The Experience of a Lifetime" / Exploring Galveston

13th of July 2008 College Station, TX
After a few weeks of waiting and last minute packing of my luggage, I was ready and excited to embark on this journey. My fellow kindhearted G-camper, Efren Rodriguez, coming from Weslaco, drove to San Antonio and we travelled together all the way to College Station. Thanks a million Efren for the ride!

We arrived at the Holiday Inn and Suites around 4 PM. Our organizers from Texas A & M University met us, have us accomplished a few paperworks, and gave us a box of roadside maps (for Texas, New Mexico and Colorado), books and other important materials needed for this adventure. Then, we met other G-Camp participants. We checked in our rooms for the night as we look forward to this experience.

"The Journey to a Thousand Miles Begins with One Step"

Being an educator is always an advantage, you get the long vacations you need especially after the hard work, dedication, commitment you have devoted to your students for the entire school year. It's about time to reward yourself. That is what I did. Then, came along the email from Region 20 regarding the G-CAMP. Boy! Was I excited? You bet! Besides my busy schedule at KIPP Aspire Academy, I was driven and determined to apply and meet the requirements and beat the deadline.

What did I have to do? I quickly read the information from the Geology Camp website and took action from there. Well, it got me writing a two-page essay and asked Mark Larson, my school director, Jo Eckermann, my science coordinator and Roy Feliciano, a colleague to write letters of recommendation. Off to the post office, mailed the application and other documents and waited for the acceptance of the application.

I just learned last July 13, 2008 in our meeting with the G-Camp organizers, Dr. John Rick Giardino, Jack Vitek and Carolyn Schroader, that there were actually about 350 applicants and ONLY 30 science teachers from all over Texas were accepted and qualified to participate. Wow! That blows my mind. But, that spelled out my vacation adventure this summer! I couldn't be more grateful for this wonderful opportunity to explore the outside world with fellow G-Campers.
